Freckles are small brown spots on your skin, often in areas that get sun exposure. In most cases, freckles are harmless. They form as a result of overproduction of melanin, which is responsible for skin and hair color (pigmentation). Freckles are not a skin disorder, but people with freckles generally have a lower concentration of photo-protective melanin, and are therefore more susceptible to the harmful effects of UV radiation.

Most freckles are produced by exposure to ultraviolet light and typically fade in the winter. Treatments are available to help lighten or eliminate bothersome freckles.

Peculiar appearing or symptomatic colored or pigmented spots should be examined by your dermatologist.
